Process and mood form

After a quick phone call going over everything in person, we can get to designing. Because digital illustrations often take much longer and are a much more involved process than anything else that I do, they require much more preparation before moving forward with the color and detailing phase. The designing process is broken down into three parts.

Part one - Mood forms and Design fee

I will require you to fill out a mood form for each illustration you require. This document helps us define exactly what type of message we are trying to convey to the reader.  Please take time to be specific as i heavily rely on these forms for all of my illustrations making sure that all the details that you have listed are included. The mood form will require you to find three reference photos for the unique stye you want me to mimic. Upon completing your mood form, I require a 50$ design fee before moving forward with preliminary sketches.

Part two- Preliminary sketches

In part two we define the overall look, composition, placement, and color palette for your illustration. This step is not meant to look good. In fact, if it does, then I am taking too long to work on your piece, and we will never finish the project. Parts one and two should only take about 20% of the overall time required to complete an illustration.

Part Three- Detailing and colorization

So here is where the magic happens. I use the general 80/20 rule stating that 80% of my time goes in to step three. But in all honesty, depending on how detailed you want your illustration, this can take a lot longer. I break this part into two separate parts. If you choose to move forward with the illustration, I will require a 150$ deposit per illustration.

Part 1-line work

Here we add the detail. We confirm that all elements involved in the drawing are also elements that are found in the world you are trying to create. If it's an outdoor scene we might go over what type of trees are in your book? How large are they in comparison to reality? Are they real or imagined?

If its an inside scene we might need to answer such question as "what types of spices are on the shelves"? or "is the floor tile or hardwood"? Is the building new or falling apart?

Once we have all questions answered we can start adding detail to the sketches. I will send you the completed line work copy before moving on to the final step.

Part 2-Colorization

This is the final step. During this phase I focus on stylizing and balancing the composition, color and lighting before sending you a final copy. It is important that we have all questions out of the way before we get to this phase.

BOOK COVERS

I price out book covers a little differently, but the overall workflow follows the same guideline as an illustration (see illustration workflow above) The only difference with most book covers is that they are not drawn by hand and don't require near the same amount of effort as an illustration

You will still be required to fill out a form just so that we are on the same page, but unlike illustrations I do all book covers for a flat fee. A standard book cover design fee is 75$. This covers the design and 3 revisions.
